Women's basketball falls in regional final to Phoenix, 54-43

MESA, AZ - Mesa's dreams of a fourth consecutive women's Region I, Division II, championship were dashed Saturday by among the unlikeliest of sources, a Phoenix College team it had beaten twice during the regular season by 31 and 22 points, in a 54-43 loss.

MCC went through two lengthy scoring droughts, one in each half, and even after regaining the lead late in the second half, was unable to secure the win.

In the first half the T-Birds went from the 6:55 mark until one minute remained without scoring, turning a three-point deficit into a nine point margin at halftime, 26-17.

Then, after regaining the lead on a three-point play by Kylie Herd (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.), 39-37 with 5:50 left, could not score again until 1:43 remained on a put-back by Herd.

Still, Mesa trailed just 43-41 at that point. But turnovers and missed shots gave PC a chance to pull away in the closing moments.

Megan Gillespie (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) had a double-double for MCC with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Herd scored seven and had 13 boards.

The T-Birds finish with a 20-11 record, their sixth consecutive 20-win season. Phoenix is 12-20.
