Turnovers, sloppy play doom women's basketball

Mesa, AZ- The women's basketball team needed to finish the season strong and win out to end the season atop the ACCAC division two standings but with a lose to Eastern Arizona on Saturday afternoon, they might not be the only team standing as the number one team.

Both teams exchanged opening punches throughout the first five minutes of the contest.  Eastern took a 7-2 lead at the 17 minute mark but Mesa answered back with seven straight points, four points coming from Taylor Reed(Fr., Kingman, AZ, Kingman H.S.) and a layup and free throw from Lacey Viselli(So., Suprise, AZ, Valley Vista H.S.).

Eastern regained the lead near the halfway mark on Jazzlynn Brewster freethrows but Mesa's Janessa Aukward(Fr., Laveen, AZ, Sierra Linda H.S.) answered right back by draining a three pointer to give Mesa the 12-11 lead.

But it was the next four minutes that really hampered the T-Birds as the Gila Monsters went on a 10-0 run.  In that time, Mesa committed six turnovers.  For the game, Mesa finished with 23 turnovers which led to 17 points for Eastern.

Mesa trailed by 14 heading into the second half and just couldn't overcome the deficit.  The T-Birds shot 3-14 from three and had a total field goal percentage of 37.3 percent.

Mesa held a one game lead over division rival Pima, who will most likely beat a depleted South Mountain squad today which will tie both teams with a 13-8 conference record.  Even if both teams were to win next week in their final games, with Pima winning both regular season games against Mesa, they will have secured home court advantage throughout the region tournament.

Mesa will be home next Tuesday night in their season finale against Tohono O'odham, tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Theo Heap Gym, carried live on T-Bird Sports Live.
