Late cold stretch spells defeat as women fall to Central Arizona, 57-48

MESA, AZ - Suffering a stretch of seven minutes and five seconds in which it scored just two points, the Mesa women's basketball team ultimately fell to Division I Central Arizona (20-4, 17-2), 57-48, Saturday at Theo Heap Gym.

MCC (17-9, 12-7) took the lead, 40-39, on a pair of free throws by Kylie Herd (So, Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) with 9:20 to play. But it wasn't until the 1:20 mark that MCC got any more than a layup by Lacey Viselli (So., Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista H.S.) and found itself on the wrong end of a 54-42 margin.

Taylor Reed (Fr., Kingman, AZ/Kingman H.S.) then scored eight consecutive points, four on free throws, to lift her team to within 54-48 with 55 seconds remaining, but the T-Birds could get no closer.

In a tight game, which saw ten lead changes and 15 ties, Mesa could not handle CAC's size and fell into a tie with Pima, which scored a 77-53 win over Arizona Western for the ACCAC Division II lead.

Herd scored 16 points while Erica Vasquez (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) and Reed added ten each. Roderika Ware paced CAC with 21.

MCC visits Chandler-Gilbert Wednesday in its final regular-season road game. It is a 5:30 p.m. start.
