Wire-to-wire as Mesa women top Phoenix, 58-36

MESA, AZ - Holding an opponent to less than 40 points for the seventh time this season, the 11th-ranked Mesa women easily downed Phoenix, 58-36, in ACCAC action at Theo Heap Gym Saturday.

The T-Birds never trailed in winning their fifth straight, holding onto their conference Division II lead.  It was also the 11th time in 22 games that opponents had failed to score 50.

MCC jumped to an 11-4 lead over the Bears (7-16, 6-9) and never looked back. At halftime the margin was 29-13, ironically the same score as when the two teams met in Phoenix in December with Mesa winning, 62-31.

Mesa quickly increased it's margin to 38-17 in improving to 16-6 and 11-4 in conference play. The Thunderbirds maintain a one-game margin over Pima in the ACCAC Division II standings.

Megan Gillespie (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) had her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. She was one of three T-Birds to reach double figures in rebounding as MCC dominated the boards, 55-36. Kylie Herd (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) had 12 and Taylor Reed (Fr., Kingman, AZ/Kingman H.S.) added ten to equal her season high.

Mesa limited the Bears to just .111 shooting from the floor (7-63) and PC missed all ten of its three-point tries.

MCC goes back on the road Wednesday, visiting Glendale at 5:30 p.m.
