Viselli leads dominant second half for women's basketball

Mesa, AZ-It's always nice to turn to sophomore leadership when your team needs some inspiration.  Saturday afternoon, that sophomore leadership showed in a big second half against Midland College from Odessa-Midland, Texas, for a last non-conference victory of the season, 61-51.

Not even having a lead in the first half, Mesa still only trailed 25-22 coming out of the locker room.  Then Mesa ramped up its offense, going on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the half, gettting two three pointers from Lacey Viselli(So., Suprise, AZ, Valley Vista H.S.) and a layup with a an extra freethrow from Megan Gillespie(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.).

The T-Bird offense just picked up steam from then on out, getting great production from Kylie Herd(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.) who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Near the midway point of the second half, Mesa's lead was 36-32 but within a four minute span went on a 14-4 run with shots made by Viselli, Herd, Gillespie and a huge three pointer from Janessa Aukward(Fr., Laveen, AZ, Sierra Linda H.S.).

Gillespie finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Mesa hit 7-11 three pointers, 4-5 in the second half.

Mesa finishes the first half of the season at a 9-3 record, 5-2 in the ACCAC.  The T-Birds will head into the second half of season playing all conference games, next coming on Wednesday at Central Arizona in Coolidge, AZ.  Game time will be 5:30, audio broadcast only on T-Birds Sports Live.
