Women's basketball edges out 58-49 victory over Glendale

Mesa, AZ- It doesn't have to always be pretty, it just has to be a victory. For the Mesa women's basketball team, the only thing they want to remember from its battle with Glendale on Saturday afternoon was that they walked out with a victory.
Sloppy from the tip, Mesa had a difficult time getting into any rhythm, as they committed 13 turnovers and only scored eight points within the first 10 minutes of the first half. Luckily for Mesa, the Gauchos themselves had a hard time getting any offense going as they only shot 34 percent from the field for the half.
But the sophomores for Mesa took control, as Kylie Herd(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.) connected on a layup to cut the Gaucho lead to one then Megan Gillespie(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.) made two free throws followed by a jump shot on the next possession to put Mesa ahead, 15-14.
A Taylor Reed(Fr., Kingman, AZ, Kingman H.S.) layup and a Didi Moloi(So., Gilbert, AZ, Campo Verde H.S.) jump shot pushed the Mesa lead to 21-16 just before half. Mesa went into halftime with a one point advantage, 25-24.
Mesa began the second half with a bit more offensive success, maintaining its lead at 34-30 at the 15:58 mark but then went stone cold, not scoring a point til the 7:37 mark, a lone free throw coming from Moloi. During which time, the Gauchos rattled off 11 points of its own, taking a 41-35 lead.
Coach Kori Stephenson then deployed full court pressure on Glendale, led by Lacey Viselli(So., Surprise, AZ, Valley Vista H.S.) who scored nine of her 11 points in the second half.
Both teams exchanged baskets and leads until the 1:16 point til Gillespie connected on two free throws and Mesa didn't allow Glendale to score for the rest of the contest. The T-Birds scored seven more points to defeat the Gauchos, 58-49.
Kylie Herd finished with a double-double, 15 points and 13 rebounds and Taylor Reed scored 12 points for the T-Birds.
Mesa moves its record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACCAC. The T-Birds will travel to South Mountain on Wednesday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m.
