Nine qualify for nationals at outdoor track and field opener

  Tempe, AZ – The outdoor track and field season got underway for Mesa with a bang at the Arizona State Baldy Castillo Invitational Friday and Saturday.

  MCC produced a total of nine qualifiers for the NJCAA national championship meet in the spring opener.

  Quinn Johnson continued her outstanding run at the indoor title meet, where she earned three All-America honors, by qualifying in two events at ASU. She qualified in the 800 meters at 2:20.00 and the 1500 with a 4:47.55 clocking.

  In addition, Alexandra Louis put her name on the 800 list with a time of 2:21.56 and Sadie Sweeney crushed the hammer standard by nearly 23 feet with a toss of 163-6.

  Meanwhile, the men grabbed five NJCAA spots led by Marcis Naisant with two. His 192-4 in the javelin beat the standard and he helped the 4x100 relay team of Gevon Grimes, Trent Stimac and Wallace Burgess  which produced a 41.84 clocking.

  Also, Tristan Stellmach put his name on the list in the 5000 at 15:01.38; Makek Hubbard leaped 6-11 in the high jump and Colton Root had a distance of 167-7 in the hammer.

  The T-Birds have a busy week coming up. Thursday the distance runners will compete in the Distance in the Dark event at Paradise Valley. Saturday MCC will be at the Cody McBride Invitational at Paradise Valley while some athletes could go to the ASU Invitational. The multi-event competitors will get their first taste of outdoor competition Thursday and Friday at the Mesa Multis.
