Performances shine at Mesa Indoor track and field meet

  Mesa, AZ – In its first chance to compete on its home track, the Mesa track and field team saw its performances shine at the Mesa Indoor and Multis Friday and Saturday at John D. Riggs Stadium.

  The MCC men produced eight new or improved NJCAA Indoor National Championship marks while the women added three more.

  Tristan Stellmach added the 1000 meters to his growing list making it his fourth qualifying mark. He covered the distance in 2:31.87 and also improved his position in the mile with a 2:31.87 clocking while winning the event.

  The 1000 was a big event for the T-Birds Saturday with three qualifying performances. In additional to Stellmach, Andrew McComber chopped more than four seconds off his mark with a 2:32.33 and Benjamin Brady joined the list with a 2:35.12 showing.

  Meanwhile, Marquis Brown-Tiller added the 200 meters to his resume with a time of 22.00.

  Marcus Naisant posted a score of 44.23 in the heptathlon, in the process had a qualifying jump in the long jump at 23-3 ¼. Juba McClay scored 4146 points and Makel Hubbard totaled 4100 and also passed the outdoor qualifying mark in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 ¼.

  In addition, the men's 4x400 relay team of Brown-Tiller, William Blocker, James Lara and Bryce Clemons beat the standard at 3:18.90 while winning the race.

  Quinn Johnson again highlighted the Mesa women's performances. She added the 1000 to her list, winning the event in 3:03.47. She also improved her time in the mile to 5:05.59 as the winner of that event.

  Sadie Sweeney tacked on nearly four feet to her qualifying mark in the weight throw with a toss of 53-5 ½.

  In addition, Rees Young posted a pentathlon score of 3171 in her first competition of the year.

  The T-Birds head for Flagstaff Friday to compete in the Northern Arizona University Turn-up, their final event before NJCAA nationals March 1-2 in Pittsburg, Kan.
