Track and Field has banner day in Tucson

  Tucson, AZ – It was a banner day for the Mesa track and field program Saturday as the T-Birds recorded nine new or improved NJCAA qualifying marks at the Jim Mielke Invitational hosted by Pima.

  The men had six of those marks, four of them for the first time.

  Freshman Marcus Naisant won the long jump at 23-1 ¾. He has also already beaten the standard in the heptathon.

  Freshman Jacob Suber added his name to the list in the 600 with a time of 1:22.47. Freshman Luke Jernigan also topped the qualifying standard in the 1,000 being clocked in 2:33.42.

  In addition, the all-freshman distance medley relay team of Jernigan, Marquis Brown-Tiller, Casey Brown and Kristan Stellmach raced to a time of 10:30.37.

  Sophomore Cameron Lewis improved his position in the two events he is qualified in with a 52-1 ¾ heave in the shot put and a 52-9 ¼ while winning the weight throw.

  Freshman Kyle Downy and sophomore Eric Cochran also topped the NJCAA standard in the pole vault but already have better marks.

  For the women, freshman Quinn Johnson added a second event to her list, qualifying while winning the 1,000 in 3:12.82. She is already on the list in the 800.

  Freshman Rees Young joined the list in the triple jump at 36-9 ½ and Justice Angel equaled her mark in the pole vault with a jump of 10-11 ¾.

  MCC will compete at home this weekend, hosting the Mesa Indoor and Multi Friday and Saturday and John D. Riggs Stadium.
