Tucson, AZ – With field events leading the way the Mesa indoor track and field team produced six NJCAA national qualifiers, as well as some other good performances, at the season-opening Pima Aztec Invitational Saturday.

In its traditionally strong event, the pole vault, MCC had two men and one woman exceed the standard for national qualifying.

For the men, freshman Kyle Downy won the event with a leap of 16-2 ¾, while sophomore Eric Cochran also met the standard at 14-9. Sophomore Justice Angel cleared 10-6 to qualify on the women's side.

The men also had two meet the national mark in the shot put. Sophomore Nikaeus Hale-Mercer recorded a 54-0 throw and sophomore Cameron Lewis reached 49-5. Lewis also added his name to the list in the weight throw at 52-4.

Mesa athletes also won three events.

The all-freshman men's 4x400 relay of Michael Abramson, Marquis Brown-Tiller, Idris Konzivenet and Jacob Suber ran a 3:27.40. Konzivenet also captured the 600 in 1:24.74 and freshman Quinn Johnson took the women's 1000 with a time of 3:19.96.
