  HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The NJCAA Division I track and field championships opened competition Thursday with a limited number of event finals.

  In the men's hammer MCC took third and fifth places, and barely missed having a third point-scorer.

  Those ten points had MCC tied for second place in the men's competition after the first day. Cowley County also had ten and Iowa Central led with 20.

  Matt Garcia (So., Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope H.S.) equalled his third place finish of a year ago with a toss of 175-11. Austin Atkins took fifth place at 174-9 and Josh Hamberlin barely missed scoring, placing ninth at 165-1.

  D'Angelo Foster (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Higley H.S.) was 13th in the decathlon after the first five events with 3051 points. Jayme Giles (So., Portland, Ore/Reynolds H.S.) was MCC's leader in the heptathlon in 13th place with 2377 points.

  Meghan Blankenship (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) was ninth in the women's hammer at 158-8.

  The 10,000 meters for both men and women were to be contested later in the day.
