Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds returned home this Saturday to host the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes. The Yotes took game one in a high-scoring affair, 24-18, and then earned a comeback win in game two, defeating the T-Birds 7-5.

With the pair of losses, the Thunderbirds remain winless at 0-8 overall and 0-8 in ACCAC play. With the victories, Chandler-Gilbert keeps their perfect record in ACCAC play intact at 9-1 overall and 8-0 in ACCAC action.

Game One:

Saturday was a tale of two different ballgames. In the first game, Chandler-Gilbert led the entire way, after striking for four runs in the top of the first inning. The Coyotes were shut out offensively in the second inning but then plated at least one run in the remaining innings. Chandler-Gilbert scored 24 runs on 25 hits but made a season-high five errors in the contest.

Although Mesa fell in game one, they scored more runs in the game (18) than they had in their previous six games combined to begin the season. Alanie Ornelas did it all for the T-Birds in game one. In the leadoff spot, Ornelas finished 2-for-6 with two homeruns, two runs scored, and a team-high 5 RBI's. In the circle, Ornelas tossed 4.1 innings and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Game Two:

In the second game of the double-dip, both offenses cooled down a bit. Chandler-Gilbert struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning to take the early lead. Mesa took over from there, striking for a run in the bottom half of the third inning, another run in the fourth, two more runs in the fifth, and another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.

Chandler-Gilbert's offense came to life in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs to take the 7-5 lead. Mesa tried to muster a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but would eventually drop their eighth straight game to begin the 2022 season.

The Thunderbirds hit the road this Tuesday for a conference doubleheader in Tucson against Pima. Game one of Tuesday's double-dip is scheduled for 1 pm.
