Opening Day Sweep for Mesa Softball vs Benedictine, 14-2 (5), 6-5
Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds softball team had nice opening day as they swept the Benedictine University of Mesa Redhawks, 14-2 (5), 6-5, at Mesa Community College Saturday afternoon.
Up 2-0 in the bottom of the second, the T-Birds Alyssa Matus connected on a solo homerun to left field to make it a 3-0 game. Later on in the bottom of the third inning, Jaden McDaniel hammered a three-run homer to left, making it at that point an 11-0 game. Mesa would tack on three more runs and get a 14-2 game one win.
In game two, Mesa saw themselves down 2-0 after one half inning but the T-Birds put a four spot on the board in the bottom half of the inning to go up, 4-2. The Redhawks eventually regained the lead, and held a 5-2 advantage till the bottom of the sixth inning before Mesa scored two go-ahead runs to go up 6-5.
A one-two-three out top of the seventh inning solidified the game two victory and opening day sweep for Mesa.
The T-Birds will play at home next Tuesday against Grand Canyon Club beginning at 1 pm.
