T-Birds Open Flood Gates, Beat Chandler-Gilbert, 17-0 (5), 9-1 (5)

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds softball team let the bats loose on Tuesday afternoon against Chandler-Gilbert, as they scored a combined 26 runs in their two games.  The T-Birds defeated the Coyotes, 17-0 and 9-1, both games ending in five innings.

After scoring four runs in the first inning, Mesa batted through the order in the second inning, scoring nine runs on five hits, with the big hit coming from Andrea Lugo, who knocked in three runs alone on her hit.

In game one, Mesa had 15 hits, five of which went for extra bases.

Emerald Grijalva and Jordan McClellan led Mesa in the field, as they only allowed two hits in five innings, both hits coming as infield hits.  Grijalva and McClellan each had three strikeouts and didn't allow the Coyotes to move past second base.

In game two, Mesa didn't get their run production till the fourth and fifth innings, when they scored seven of their eight runs.  Valeria Macias cranked a two run homer in the fourth inning to make it a 3-1 game with a Emerald Grijalva hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 8-1 game.  Sienna Erran finished off the game with a single up the middle to score Alexis Cirerol to complete the sweep of Chandler-Gilbert.

Mesa has now won all four games against Chandler-Gilbert this season, and have won four of their last six games.

The T-Birds will play Grand Canyon Club on Thursday at 2 pm then will play two games at South Mountain on Saturday, starting at noon.
