SCOTTSDALE, The Mesa softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Scottsdale Saturday, falling 4-3 in eight innings and 8-0.
The first game was a heart-breaker. Trailing 3-2, MCC tied it in the top of the seventh when Bridget Kruck (So., Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian H.S.) doubled and Meggan Horn (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) drove her in with a double. The Artichokes, however, won it in the eight when, by rule, the leadoff hitter was placed at second base and scored on a single with one out.
Kruck was 3-4. Mariah Gonzales (So., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.), Natasha Mercado (Fr., Las Cruces, NM/Centennial H.S.) and Horn were all 2-4 with Gonzales and Horn adding an RBI each. Whalen was 2-4 with two doubles and drove in a run.
In game two, the T-Birds' offense never got un-tracked, producing just four singles.
MCC concludes its regular season Tuesday at Yavapai, still clinging to hope for a Region I playoff berth.
