Softball falls to South Mountain twice

  PHOENIX, AZ - Two late outbursts by South Mountain led to a doubleheader sweep over Mesa Thursday. 10-3 and 3-2.

  SMCC took a 5-3 lead in game one into the sixth when it broke loose for five runs en route to a 10-3 victory.

  Kendra Whelan (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Cocnino H.S.), Bridget Kruck (So., Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian H.S.) and Meggan Horn (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) all had two hits for MCC.

  In the second game each team scored twice in the third. For the T-Birds Kayla Bradford (Fr., St. David, AZ/St. David H.S.) was hit by a pitch to lead off. With one out Natasha Mercado (Fr., Las Cruces, NM/Centennal H.S.) doubled her home. Kruck then reached on an error and Horn singled.

  The Cougars scored the winning run in the sixth.

  Alyssa Gallegos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Cibola H.S.), Mercado and Horn all went 2-4.

  Mesa visits GateWay for a doubleheader Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
