Softball splits two with Central on Sophomore day

Mesa, AZ-The Mesa softball team finished its home game schedule for the season, even though it is the end of March, by splitting a pair of games with Central, 5-3, 7-6.

Mesa battled hard in the first game and led for til the final inning but a Vaquero four run top of the seventh spoiled a sophomore day sweep for the T-Birds.

Like she seems to do every game, Kendra Whelan(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a couple Vaquero pass balls.

Mesa added another run in the bottom of the second inning but heading into the bottom of the third inning, found themselves down, 4-2.

Mariah Gonzales(So., Gilbert, AZ, Highland H.S.) singled followed by another single by Meggan Horn(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) which brought Natasha Marcado(Fr., Las Cruces, N.M., Centennal H.S.) to the plate.  On a high outside pitch, Marcado took it down the right field, with the ball landing about a foot inside fair territory, bringing home Gonzales and Horn, to tie the game at 4.

Central again knocked in two more runs but Mesa battled back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at six.

Mesa was able to take care of the Vaqueros in the top of the seventh and the T-Birds had the heart of the lineup coming up in the bottom of the inning.

Meggan Horn singled to right field to start Mesa off in the bottom half of the inning.  Marcado then hit into a fielders choice which pushed Horn to second.  Korynn Molina(Fr., Tempe, AZ, Marcos De Niza H.S.) then pitch ran for Horn at second base.  During the Brittney Ramos(Fr., Yuma, AZ, Kofa H.S.) at bat, a passed ball helped Molina move to third.

On a 3-1 count, Ramos crushed a line drive right back up the middle to score Molina and give Mesa the 7-6 win.

Mesa will now by on the road for the rest of the regular season.
