Impressive sweep over Pima for softball

Mesa, AZ-

Game 1

Following their sweep of Contralia College on Wednesday, Mesa again brought their bats to the yard and swept the Pima Aztecs, 9-5, 10-8.

Mesa's success has come early the past few games, led by lead off hitter Kendra Whelan(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) who doubled on the first pitch of the inning followed by a single by Bridget Kruck(So., Lynden, Wash., Lynden Christian H.S.).

Whelan was able to score on a pass ball then Mariah Gonzales(So., Gilbert, AZ, Highland H.S.) singled to right center field to bring in the second run for Mesa.

In the second inning, Alyssa Gallegos(Fr., Yuma, AZ, Cibola H.S.) brought home two runs with a single to right center field, pushing the T-Bird run count to four.  Gallegos eventually scored later in the inning.

Then a big fifth inning sealed the deal for Mesa as they collected four runs on four hits and a walk.  It was a Whelan double that brought home two runs during this time that was the big hit of the inning.

In all, Mesa collected 14 total hits.

Game 2

It was once again a quick start to front of side of the line up as the first four batters for Mesa came across the plate in the first inning.

Whelan again was able to get on base via single to center field followed by a Aztec error which helped Kruk get on.  Gallegos walked after being down in the count 0-2.

A wild pitch brought Whelan home and a few pitches later, Meggan Horn(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) singled home the two remaining baserunners, and Horn was able to advance to second on the throw home.

Brittney Ramos(Fr., Yuma, AZ, Kofa H.S.) then singled to center to bring home Horn and Mesa regained the early lead, as Pima scored three runs in the first inning.

Mesa added two more runs in the second inning and then another four run fifth inning helped Mesa extend their lead to ten and that's all they needed. Pima threatened in the later innings but came up short.

Mesa has now won five straight games and moves its record to 17-21.  Mesa will play their last home game of the season next Tuesday, also sophomore day, at 12 and 2 o'clock start.
