South Mountain takes down softball twice

  MESA, AZ - Using an early burst in the first game, and then a grand slam in the second, South Mountain swept a doubleheader from Mesa Tuesday, 13-3 and 9-5.

  In the opener the Cougars put six on the board in the first game and four more in the second to take control.

  Natasha Mercado (Fr., Las Cruces, N.M./Centennial H.S.) and Mariah Gonzales (So., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.) each had three hits for the T-Birds.

  With Mesa leading 5-4 entering the sixth inning of game two, Brianna Schrimpf blasted a grand slam home run to provide the winning margin for SMCC.

  Kendra Whalen (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.), Alyssa Gallegos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Cibola H.S.) and Gonzales were each 2-4 for the T-Birds.

  Mesa is back in action Saturday when it visits Phoenix at noon.
