Lopez' hit in seventh delivers softball split with Glendale

MESA, AZ -  Alina Lopez (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Chandler H.S.) delivered a clutch single in the bottom of the seventh, scorigg Kayla Bradford (Fr., St. David, AZ/St. David H.S.) and Bridget Kruck (So., Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian H.S.) as Mesa rallied with two runs to score a 4-3 win over Glendale Thursday for a split of the doubleheader. The Gauchos won the opener, 11-1.

After GCC had scored two of its own in the top of the inning, Bradford walked with one out to begin the rally. Kruck then reached on an error. After Kendra Whalen (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) walked Lopez delivered her big hit.

MCC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Whalen singled and eventually scored on a ground ball by Natasha Mercado (Fr., Las Cruces, NM/Centennial H.S.).

After Glendale tied it in the fourth, Bradford snapped the tie with her second home run of the season.

Samantha Christensen (So., Shelley, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) came on in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings to gain her third win of the year.

Whalen also had two hits in the opener.
