MESA, AZ - A string of games against Division I opponents finally came to an end for the Mesa softball team as it dropped a doubleheader to Arizona Western, 12-1 and 12-4.
Mesa's run in the first contest came in the second when Brittney Ramos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Kofa H.S.) singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a base hit by Mariah Gonzales (So., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.).
But AWC broke things open with seven in the third and four more in the fifth.
Alyssa Gallegos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Cibola H.S.) was 2-3.
In game two the Matadors struck early before MCC exploded for four in the fourth. Kayla Bradford (Fr., St. David, AZ/St. David H.S.) had the big hit, a two-run double. Kendra Whalen (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) was 2-3 with a run scored.
After a run of six straight games against Division I opponents, the T-Birds begin eight in a row versus DII teams when they host GateWay Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
