Men's tennis wins seventh straight Region I championship
Glendale, AZ – Winning seven of nine final matches the Mesa men's tennis team claimed another Region I championship Wednesday.
For the T-Birds it was their seventh regional title in a row, interrupted only by last year's COVID-19 shortened season in which no regional was held.
MCC won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles, losing only on injury.
In the process, No. 1 Beto Carlon and No. 2 Leandro Prado maintained their unbeaten records for the season. Both are 8-0 in singles. No. 6 Hung Pham is also 5-0.
"I'm so proud of this team! We came to battle today, said head coach Feroz Rast. "Going into the finals of all nine matches we were able to win five out of the six singles flights and two out of three doubles flights. We dominated in singles flights 1, 2, 3, 5 and pulled out a big three-set win on court #6. Court #4 lost a tough one in three-sets. Doubles play was just as impressive as we won both the number 1 and 2 matches in straight sets. I love how this team is improving every day and is ready for big matchups! We have a few weeks now to prepare for our biggest challenge. Can't wait to go to Texas for the national tournament. It is a great day to be a T-Bird!"
The NJCAA Division I National Championship will be held in Plano, Texas, beginning May 17.
