All eight remaining flights advance for men's tennis at NJCAA nationals; currently in third place
Tucson, AZ – It was a big day for the fifth-ranked Mesa men's tennis team as all eight remaining flights reached Wednesday's quarter final round.
The day's place left MCC with 26 points, just one behind co-leaders ASA and Tyler.
The T-Birds won their matches in all six singles flights and the two doubles teams which won Monday also were victorious.
In singles, at No. 1, fourth-seeded Kyrylo Kryvchun knocked off Angelo Tost of Crowley. 7-6. 6-4 and will meet fifth-seeded Frederik Oervad of Eastern Florida Wednesday.
At No. 2 singles MCC's unseeded Gonzalo Fernandez upset fifth-seeded Manuel Pilotto of Laredo, 6-3, 6-4. He gets another seeded opponent in number four Bruce Suiama of Cowley.
Maxim Kirsch, the number five seed, captured his No. 3 singles match over Cliff Dwyer of Iowa Central on a walkover, Dwyer was ill. Kirsch meets fourth-seeded Carlos Izuieta of Seward next.
At No. 4, Johan Prinsen topped Nick Freeman of Kaskaska, 6-0, 6-0, but now must face top-seeded Andres Cabezas of ASA.
In the No. 5 singles match third-seeded Jorge Sala knocked off Gabriel Sa of ABAC, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and will take on sixth-seeded Sebastian Bunster of Eastern Florida.
The No. 6 singles match went to sixth-seeded Lucas Severo over Cameron Dehart of Collin, 6-3, 6-2. Severo meets number two Alex Mesquita Berg of Seward next.
In doubles, the T-Birds' Kryvchun and Fernandez, the number six seeded team stopped Guido Luna and Sebastian Pino of Barton, 6-2, 6-1 and next face the third seed Alex Parker and Marcus Walters of Tyler.
At No. 3, MCC's fifth-seeded Corey Pabst and Prinsen defeated Gabriel Sa and Phouong Pham of ABAC, 6-0, 6-4. They will play fourth-seeded Casey Edwards and Valter Oshiro of Cowley in the quarter-finals.
The No. 2 doubles team of Kirsch and Severo will play in the consolation round against Killian Dagneaux and Wesley Fontaine of Cowley.
