Men's tennis wins fifth straight Region I title
Glendale, AZ – The 11th-ranked men's tennis team won its fifth straight Region I, Division I championship, while the MCC women placed third at the Paseo Tennis Center Wednesday.
Both teams qualified for the NJCAA National Championships. The men will compete May 14-18 in Plano, Texas, while the women will be at Waco, Texas, May 6-10.
The T-Bird men won four of the six singles flights and took all three doubles in securing the title.
Gergo Rendek, ranked 11th nationally in singles, scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at N. 2 singles, Yohan Prinsen won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1, Lucas Severo took the No. 5 singles flight 6-0, 6-2 and Jeff Martin won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Rendek and Martin had a walkover win at No. 1 doubles, Gorge Sala and Prinsen were victorious at No. 2, 6-1, 7-5 and Erik Dallmann teamed with Severo to win at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3.
The Mesa women played in one singles and two doubles flights, but lost all three.
