Four singles players, two doubles teams advance to NJCAA championship quarter-finals

  Plano, Texas – It was another good day for the Mesa men's tennis team at the NJCAA Division I national championship as four singles players and two doubles teams advanced to quarter-final action.

  At the end of the day Tuesday, the T-Birds were in fourth place with 24 points, three behind co-leaders ABAC and Tyler and just a half-point shy of third place Seward.

  In singles action, MCC's top two players both advanced. No. 1 David Felix defeated Daniel Gomez of Lewis & Clark,  6-1, 6-4 setting up an 8:00 a.m. Wednesday quarter-final with top seeded Ferran Calvo of Tyler.

  Meanwhile, No. 2 Linus Holthey beat Mattias Vargas of Laredo, 6-3, 7-5 and will play No. 4 seed Duro Opacic, of Seward Co. at 8:00.

  At No. 5, Gergo Rendek blanked Austin Blair from DuPage, 6-0, 6-0 and will face fourth-seeded Eymeric Chevalier of ABAC at 9:30.

  Eduardo Cuoto upset fifth-seeded Jason Roberts of Laredo, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 at No 6 singles and will take on No. 3-seed Colton Phillips of ABCA at 9:30.

  In doubles, the No. 2 team of Felix and Rendek, seeded fifth stopped Andrew Carey and William Foster of Marion Military, 6-1, 6-1 and will play the third-seeded duo of Alex Mosehle and Gabriel Nery of Seward Co., at 2:00.

  At No. 3 doubles, Cuoto and Matt Fisher won over Luke Armstrong and Jacob Bozeman from Jones Co., 6-0, 6-1. Their Wednesday quarter-final opponents will be top-seeded Duro Opacic and Przemek of Seward Co. at 2:00.

  The Mesa players who fell Tuesday were No. 3 Kim Donhuynh who lost to Victor Bravo, Laredo, 1-6, 0-6 and No. 4 Matt Fisher who dropped a 2-6, 3-6 match to fifth-seeded Myrohn Mirada, Laredo.

  In doubles, MCC's No. 1 team of Holthey and Noel Maurin lost to Victor Bravo and Juan Cruz Scoppetta of Laredo, 2-6, 6-7(4).
