Men's tennis shares lead after first day of national championships

  Plano, Texas – In a huge day for the Mesa men's tennis team, all nine flights advanced on the first day of competition at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship putting MCC in a tie for first place.

  The T-Birds posted 12 points on opening day at Collin College and were tied for the lead with Jacksonville. Host Collin and New Mexico Military were tied for third with ten points apiece.

  The scoring started with a win at No. 1 singles by David Felix over Andres Graterol of Jacksonville, 7-5, 6-1. Felix will play Daniel Gomez of Lewis & Clark at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

  At No. 2, fifth-seeded Linus Holthey received a first round bye and will meet Mattias Vargas of Laredo at 8:00.

  Kim Donghyun stopped Chase Pennington of Jones Co., 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 to advance to a 9:15 match with   Victor Bravo of Laredo.

  Matt Fisher was a winner at No. 4 over Callin Shinall, Meridian of 6-2, 6-0 and will take on fifth-seeded Myrohn Mirada of Laredo at 10:30.

  The No. 5 singles match easily went to MCC's Gergo Rendek over Juan James of Barton, 6-0, 6-0. Rendek faces Austin Blair of DuPage, 10:30.

  Eduardo Cuoto scored a solid, 6-1, 6-1 win over Parker Johnson of Seminole State and will play fifth-seeded Jason Roberts of Laredo at 11:45.

  At No. 1 doubles, MCC' Holthey and Noel Maurin topped Oliver Gallego and Alec Munro of Lake Co., 6-2, 6-1. They will face Victor Bravo and Juan Cruz Scoppetta of Laredo at 1:00.

  Felix and Rendek, the fifth seeds received a bye and will play Andrew Carey and William Foster of Marion Military at 2:15.

  Cuoto and Fisher, playing at No. 3 also received a bye and will take on Luke Armstrong and Jacob Bozeman of Jones Co. at 2:15.
