Men's Tennis Capture 5th Place at Nationals

PLANO, Texas – The Mesa men's tennis team finished in the top five in the nation for the second year in a row, taking fifth place at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Friday.

MCC scored 28 points, just one-half point behind ABAC. ASA-Miami won the title with 47 points.

Last year the T-Birds tied for fourth place at nationals.  In the last two matches involving Mesa players, third-seeded David Felix (Fr., Saarbrueken, Germany) fell to No. 1 seed Federico Gomez, of ASA, at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 3-6. In the No. 5 singles consolation finals Matt Fisher (Fr., Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills H.S.) won, 5-2 with opponent Adarsh Sahoo, of Prairie State, retiring.

The T-Birds completed the regular season with a 12-1 record, losing only to NCAA Division II Western New Mexico. MCC swept through ACCAC play unbeaten without losing a single set.
