Men's and Women's Tennis Untouchable in Winning Region Championships

GLENDALE, AZ – It was a clean sweep for the Mesa men's and women tennis teams at the Region I championships. If there was something to be one, the T-Birds captured it.  The events were held at the Paseo Racquet Club.

Both teams won all nine flights, six singles and three doubles, and will now move on to NJCAA championship play.  The men will compete May 16-20 in Plano, Texas, and the women May 7-13 in Tyler, Texas.  

Aside from winning all the flights, MCC also took each of the major honors. Sacha Modica (Fr., London, England) was chosen men's Player of the Year as was Emily De La Silva Chang (Sau Paolo, Brazil) for the women.  

Head coach Adam Cohen was named Coach of the Year for both divisions.  Named to men's first team all-conference were: Modica, Linus Holthey (Fr., Hamburg, Germany), David Felix (Fr., Saarbrueken, Germany), Shimon Murakami (Fr., Sapporo, Japan), Max Wightman (So., Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain H.S.) and Eduardo Cuoto (Fr., Sao Paolo, Brazil).  

The doubles teams of Modica and Holthey, Wightman and Murakami and Andres Loaiza (Fr., San Jose, Costa Rica) and Matt Fisher (Fr., Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills H.S.) were also all-conference.  

Named all-conference for the women were: Chang, Khanh Huynh (Fr., Vietnam), Yolena Carlon (Fr., Mesa, AZ), Naa Ankrah (Fr., Amsterdam Netherlands), Hanna Nelson (Fr., Mesa, AZ) and Maria Beatriz Garduno (Fr., San Luis Potosi, Mexico). The doubles teams of Chang and Huynh, Carlon and Garduno and Nelson and Julia Ortiz, were also honored.
