Men's tennis closes four-year opponent portion of schedule with 8-1 win over Hastings

  MESA, AZ - Finishing the last of six matches against four-year schools, Mesa topped NAIA Hastings (Neb.), 8-1 Saturday to go 3-3 against the higher division opponents.

  MCC defeated NCAA Division I Portland State, Division II Colorado State-Pueblo and Hastings, while losing only to NCAA DI Idaho State and DII Western New Mexico and Point Loma Nazarene.

  Against Hastings, MCC swept all six singles matches. 

  Max Wightman (Fr., Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain H.S.) won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0 over Isaac Mertens and Andy Nguyen (So., Bien Hoa, Vietnam/Hamilton (AZ) H.S.) took the No. 5 slot over Leland Dexter, 6-0, 6-1.

  Only two of the singles matches went as far as tie-breaker sets, with the T-Birds taking both.

  MCC has only one match remaining before the NJCAA Division I Regional Tournament. The last match will have Mesa visiting Glendale on Tuesday, April 14 at 1:30 p.m.
