CALIFORNIA - The Mesa fifth-ranked men's tennis team split a pair of matches it played in California over the weekend, knocking off one of the top junior college teams in the state, 9-0, before falling to another NCAA Division II opponent, 6-3.

Beginning the trip Friday at Indian Wells, Calif., MCC blanked College of the Desert, a team that Mesa head coach Adam Cohen indicated was one of the best in the state.

The T-Birds swept all matches in straight sets. Max Wightman (Fr., Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain H.S.) won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Feiple Fuentes and Andy Nguyen (So., Bien Hoa, Vietnam/Hamilton (AZ) H.S.) won by the same score at No. 5 over Stephane Biboum.

Taking on Point Loma Nazarene Saturday in San Diego, MCC fell 6-3.

Wightman won again at No. 2 over James Tenbroeck, 6-2, 4-6, (10-8) and Nguyen also prevailed, this time at No. 6, with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kevin McKelligan.

Harry Busby, (So., England), ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA, was a victor at No. 1 singles when he beat the 39th-raked NCAA Division II player, Martin Blaho, 6-4, 4-6, (10-5).
