Men's tennis stuns NCAA Division I Portland State, 4-3

LAS VEGAS, NEV - In what may well be the biggest victory in Mesa men's tennis history, the T-Birds up-ended NCAA Division I Portland State Monday, 4-3.

Mesa, which is also playing Division I Idaho State on its visit to Las Vegas, won three of the six singles matches and took the doubles point. In NCAA the team which wins at least two of the doubles matches gets the only point awarded.

Harry Busby (So., England) led the way with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ethan Lopez at No. 1 singles.

Vitali Kotelianets (Fr., Ukraine) took the No. 4 match over Matt Pronesti and Kevin McMahon (So., Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) won at No. 6, 6-0, 7-5 over Nacor Ibanez.

In doubles, Busby teamed with Max Wightman (Fr., Scottsdale/Desert Mountain) for a 6-3 win over Lopez and Brent Wheeler at No 1.

Andy Nguyen (So., Bien Hoa, Vietnam/Hamilton (AZ) H.S.) and Kotelianets won at No. 3, 6-3.

Most of Mesa's other matches were also quite close.

The T-Birds are now 6-1 and Portland State 5-8 against other NCAA schools.
