NCAA DII Western New Mexico hands men's tennis first loss, 6-3

  SILVER CITY, NM - It took an NCAA Division II opponent, Western New Mexico, to finally hand the Mesa men's tennis team a loss, with a 6-3 victory Saturday.

  Max Wightman (Fr., Scottsdalem, AZ/Desert Mountain H.S.) got a big win at No. 2 singles, taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jean-Laurent Pageault and Kevin McMahon (So., Tempe, AZ/Coronoa del Sol H.S.) won at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2, over Omar Lopez.

  Mesa also dropped two tough singles matches. Harry Busby (Sol, England), fell at No. 1 in a heart-breaker, 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, to Juan Pablo Fuentes and Vitali Kotelianets (Fr., Ukraine) dropped a tough 6-7, 6-7, decision at No. 3 to Tritian DaLio.

  MCC won at No. 1 doubles with Busby and Wightman teaming for an 8-3 win over DiLao and Vladimir Gnilozubov.

  Things don't get any easier for Mesa which will take on a pair of NCAA Division I opponents Monday. The T-Birds will meet Idaho State at 9:00 a.m. and Portland State at 2:00 p.m. with both matches taking place in Las Vegas.
