Two Singles, All Three Doubles Advance at NJCAA Tennis

  PLANO, Texas - The No. 5 and 6 singles players, and all three doubles teams, advanced for the Mesa men's tennis team at the NJCAA National Championship Tuesday.

  Ryan Huss, pictured right, (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) defeated Austin Jacobs, of Barton (Kan.), 6-2, 6-2, to move into the quarter-finals. He will meet second-seeded Trey Seymour, of Tyler (Texas) Wednesday.

  At No 6 singles Andy Nguyen (Fr., Biena Ha, Vietnam/Hamilton (AZ) H.S.) topped Joshua Ellis, of Cowley (Kan.), 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 to also reach the quarters where he will face Michael Bailey, the number four seed, of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural (Ga.), 

Two doubles teams won, and another received a bye.

  At No. 1, Gabriel Cerritos (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) and Justin Haag won over Ricardo Berlinga and Edgar Polanco, of Jacksonville (Texas) 6-4, 6-2 and will play second-seeded Vasil Surduck and Tendai Tapfuma, of Seminole (Okla.) St. Wednesday.

  The No. 2 team of Felipe Oriole (So., Barcelona, Spain/IPSI H.S.) and Nhuyen defeated Gil Lim and Daniel Apacible, of Jacksonville, 6-0, 6-0 and will face Liam Gomez and Stephen Watson, the No. 1 seeded team, Wednesday.

  Gustavo D'Ascenzi (So., Campanis, Brazil/Colegio H.S.) and Hus, playing at No. 3 doubles, had a bye and will meet Soren Sibensen and Patrick Stasak, of Harford (Md.) next.

  Four MCC singles players were eliminated. D'Ascenzi fell to third-seeded Warren Kuhn, of Vincennes (Ind.) 0-6, 0-6. Felipe lost at No., 2 to Vaughan Hunter, seeded number two, of Tyler, 4-6, 1-6. Kevin McMahon (Fr., Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) was eliminated by Jorge Garza, of New Mexico Military, 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (2). Haag dropped a 0-6, 2-6 match to third-seeded Christian Waldron, of ASA (NY), at No. 4.
