MESA, AZ - No. 1-ranked Yavapai found its hands full in a battle with a gutsy Mesa men's soccer team before finally pulling out a 2-0 victory that was even closer than the final score indicated.
The 14-0-1 Roughriders scored in the 24th minute on a goal by Guillermo Diaz to grab a slim lead but found MCC out-shooting them, 13-10, including 10-3 in shots on goal.
YC then added a meaningless goal with 2.5 seconds remaining on a long kick by Diaz into a basically open net.
The T-Birds are now 7-6 as they battle for a Region 1 playoff spot. They will host GateWay Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at John D. Riggs Stadium.
