Men's golf places second at regional; Hardman wins individual title

  Gold Canyon, AZ – South Mountain fired two sub-par rounds while Mesa had one, leading the Cougars to a nine-shot victory at the Region I, Division II men's golf championship Sunday at the Gold Canyon G.C. Sidewinder Course. The Cougars will advance to the NJCAA championship.

  SMCC carded a final-round 277 for an 1142 final total. The T-Birds were at 283 and 1151.

  MCC's Austin Hardman tied for the individual lead with the Cougars' Leon D'Souza. Hardman closed with a two-under 68 for a 72-hole total of 281, just one over par. D'Souza had a 69 Sunday and also finished at 281. Hardman won the individual regional title in a playoff with D'Souza. Hardman parred the first playoff hole while D'Asuza bogeyed.

  Mesa's Jake Guess placed third in the event with a final-round 71 and 284 total. Ryan Porter was tied for fifth at 71-293, a five-shot Improvement from his Saturday round. Zane Smith's Sunday 73 was seven shots better than Saturday and gave him a 72-hole total of 302, good for ninth place. Brad Pottle was tenth at 303.

  The tournament concludes Mesa's season.
