Men's golf grabs three-shot lead on first day of Region I championship
Gold Canyon, AZ – Led by a one-over-par 71 from Dean Harpe, the Mesa men's golf team grabbed a three-shot lead after the first day of the Region I, Division II championship Thursday at the tough Gold Canyon G.C. Sidewinder Course.
That round paced MCC to a team total of 295, three shots ahead of Glendale and Chandler-Gilbert which both carded 298s. South Mountain is fourth with a 305.
Harpe was tied for second, one shot in back of Michael Marreel, of Chandler-Gilbert who shot a 70.
The T-Birds also got a 73 from Jake Guess, who is tied for fifth. Brad Pottle was tied for seventh with a 75 and Gage Grimes is tied for 11th at 76. Jeff Kelley is tied for 13th at 78.
The four-day event continues Friday through Sunday with the winner earning a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Championship. That will be played at the Longbow G.C. in Mesa May 23-26. As one of the host institutions, MCC will receive an automatic spot.
