Men's golf spoils South Mountain party with 11-shot win

  Phoenix, AZ – Breaking a first-round tie, the Mesa men's golf team surged to a six-under-par 278 to ruin host South Mountain's Invitational golf tournament Tuesday at the Legacy Golf Resort. The T-Birds finished 11 shots ahead of the defending state champion Cougars.

  MCC finished with a two-day total of 284-278—564 to capture its second tournament win of the year.

  The T-Birds were led by Dean Harpe who carded a three-under 68 on day two for a 71-68—138 to take individual honors.

  "We finally finished a round of golf as a team today," said coach John Guerrero.  "I'm hoping
this is a big confidence boost for us going into the second half of our season.  I'm proud of the team."
  In addition to Harpe, 
Dayton Federley scorched the course with a six-under 65, the T-Birds'
low round of the year, to place fifth with a 144 total. MCC's second round team 278 was
also its lowest of the year.
  
Gage Grimes shot a 71-73—144 to also tie for fifth place

  Up next for the T-Birds is the Pima Invitational in Tucson April 9-10.
