GOLD CANYON, AZ - After trailing South Mountain by just one shot after 36 holes at the Region I, Division II Men's Golf Championship, the Mesa men's golf team was unable to match it's earlier performance and placed second behind the Cougars.

Mesa finished with an 1161 total to 1124 for SMCC. A year ago the T-Birds knocked off South Mountain to advance to the NJCAA National Championship where they ultimately placed second. Due to a quirk in the national qualifying, Region I sends only one team to nationals each year despite being one of the top regions in the nation.

Austin Fletcher (So., Memphis, Tenn/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) finished as MCC's leader with a 287 total, good for fifth place.

Mesa then had the seventh through tenth finishers. Bryce Melville (Fr., Morinville, Alberta/Sturgeon H.S.) was seventh at 2901 and Brandon Carlson (So., Gilbert, AZ/Perry H.S.) placed eighth with a 291.
