Carlson leads men's golf to victory at prestigious Ron Marshall Spring Fling

  SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - Brandon Carlson (So., Gilbert, AZ/Perry H.S.) fired a 66, the best round of the entire tournament, to help lead the Mesa men's golf team to a nine-shot win at the 21-team Ron Marshall Spring Fling Saturday.

  The event, which is also sometimes referred to as the NJCAA Preview, was played at the Goose Pon Colony G.C., which will be the site of the NJCAA Division II championship in May.

  The T-Birds even won despite missing low-scorer Austin Fletcher (So., Memphis, Tenn/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) who was unable to make the trip.

  Carlson's round helped the T-Birds to the best team round of the event, a 283 Saturday, five shots better than any other team for the weekend.

  Mesa finished at 295-293-283--871, nine shots clear of Tyler (Texas) and 13 ahead of Darton (Ga.) and Mississippi Gulf Coast.

  Carlton finished tied for eighth place with a 76-77-66--219. He blistered the back nine with a six-under par 30, birdieing six of the nine holes, to lead the T-Birds who expanded a three-shot margin after day two to the eventual nine-shot win.

  Bryce Melville (Fr., Morinville, Alberta/Sturgeon H.S.) was also tied for eightr with a 71-72-76--219 and Alex Lobeck (So., Mandan, ND/Perry (AZ) H.S.) finished tied for 13th at 73-73-74--220 in the 125-player field.

  Mesa will go right back into action Monday in the Pima Invitational in Tucson, AZ.
