Men's golf tied for second at NJCAA nationals after round 1

PLYMOUTH, Ind. -- The Mesa men's golf team posted a 298 (+10) on the first day of the NJCAA Division II national tournament Tuesday on the Black Course in Plymouth, Ind.

Walters State CC stands in first place with a score of 297 (+9), while both T-Birds and Owens CC are tied, just one stroke behind.

"Not bad considering some of the boys had some jitters," head coach John Guerrero said.  "Ryan and Ben were solid all day.  At the end of the week, it will take a total team effort if we are to succeed."  

Ryan Witte (So., Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) shot of score of 70 (-2), standing in second place, individually. Benjamin Potter (So., Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe) wasn't far behind with a 74 (+2), who also tied for 11th place, individually. Austin Fletcher (Fr., Memphis, Tenn./Mountain Pointe) and Jacob Montplaiser (So., Gilbert, Ariz./Dobson) both recorded a 77 while Justin Hyden (So., Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe) carded an 80.

Second round tee times will start at 7 a.m. Wednesday on the Black Course at Swan Lake Resort.
