Men's Golf Still Second But Now 16 Shots Back Beginning Final Day of NJCAA Golf

  PLYMOUTH, Ind - It wasn't the kind of day they envisioned as the Mesa men's golf team remained in second place but slipped to 16 shots back at the NJCAA Division II Golf Championship Wednesday at the Swan Lake Resort.

 The T-Birds had been second on each of the first two days, but it each case just two shots behind.

  MCC shot  a 302 to run its three-day total to 897, but saw leader Walters (Tenn.) State put together its best round of the tournament, a 288, to close at 881. Mississippi Gulf Coast is thir,d five shots behind Mesa and Owens (Ohio) is fourth five more shots back.

  Jacob Montplaisir, pictured right, (So., Gilbert, AZ/Dobson H.S.) had the best round of the day for the T-Birds, a 74. He is tied for 18th place at 225.

  Three other Mesa players all shot 76. Ryan Witte (So., Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista H.S.) stands in eighth place at 221, Ben Potter (So., Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe H.S.) is tied for 14th at 224 and Austin Fletcher (Fr., Memphis, Tenn/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) is tied for 30th with a 229 total.

  Justin Hyder (So., Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe H.S.) carded a 77 and is tied for 37th win a three-day total of 231.

  MCC will begin play in the event's final round Friday at 12:51 EDT.
