Matadors Give Mesa First Loss of the Season, 70-65

Mesa, AZ - With a chance to head into the Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout with an undefeated record, Mesa just couldn't overcome the Matadors of Arizona Western Thursday night at Theo Heap Gym, falling 70-65.

The T-Birds just couldn't seem to string good plays together, as they seem like a team playing preseason games than a team looking for their ninth straight victory.

On the night, Mesa shot just 18-47 (38.3%) from the field, making just around a quarter of their three pointers (5-19, 26.3%) and going 24-36 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.

It was a wire-to-wire victory for the Matadors, scoring the first four points of the game and never looking back.  Their largest lead of 13 came in the second half around the 10 minute mark with Arizona Western getting 31 points from their bench, compared to just 15 for Mesa.

Only two Thunderbirds scored in double-figures on the night.  Obi Megwa leading with 14 points, while Jamil Wilson-Jones scored 11.

Mesa's record is now 8-1 overall, 4-1 in the ACCAC.  The T-Birds will have a few weeks off before hosting the Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout December 28, 29, 30th, all games being at Theo Heap Gym.
