Men take sixth straight with 84-66 victory at Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Building on an 11-point halftime lead, the Mesa men scored an 84-66 victory at Scottsdale Saturday for their sixth straight victory.

In improving to 14-5 overall and 11-2 in ACCAC play, MCC built as much as a 17-point first half lead, saw it shrink to as few as five, but bounced back and gradually pulled away in the second half.

The T-Birds used a 17-9 run midway through the first half to gain a 39-22 advantage when Mitch Burnett (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Central H.S.) scored on a put-back with 2:51 to play.

Scottsdale (8-13, 5-8) narrowed the gap to 41-30 at halftime, using some timely three-point shooting and then clawed to within five, 44-39, on a three-point play by Connor Helvig who closed with 19 points.

Khari Holloway (So., Jackson, Miss/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) hit a layup to ignite a 9-3 burst for Mesa and the T-Birds' lead was never less than six again.

Holloway, who has won ACCAC Player of the Week honors for the last two weeks, made a strong case for yet another honor, leading MCC with 22 points. Coming on the heels of his career-high 31 point outburst Wednesday against Cochise, he averaged 26.5 points per game for the week.

Burnett finished with 14 points and Jordan Pratt (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) canned 13 for his seventh double-figure scoring effort in the last nine games.

Andrew Jones (So., Portalnd, Ore/Westview H.S.) came off the bench to add ten points.

Kyle Bingham (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) had eight rebounds, Pratt seven and Burnett six as MCC won on the boards, 40-29. Holloway contributed seven assists and was 8-14 from the floor. As a team the Thunderbirds shot .508 (31-61) from the field and limited SCC to .386 (22-57) shooting.

Mesa will complete a stretch of four road games in five contests when it visits Arizona Western Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
