Men's basketball hangs wire-to-wire victory on Scottsdale, 80-65

MESA, AZ - The goal was to bounce back strong after a difficult defeat Wednesday at Cochise, and that the Mesa men's basketball team did in style with a wire-to-wire victory over Scottsdale, 80-65, Saturday at Theo Heap Gym.

The T-Birds jumped in front quickly on a three-point play by Jordan Pratt (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) a pair of free throws by Kyle Bingham (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) and a three-pointer by Andrew Jones (So., Portland, Ore/Westview H.S.) to take an 8-0 lead in the first minute and a half, and were never headed.

MCC built as much as a 14-point margin in the opening half when Bingham made a layup at the 4:43 mark, but saw the Artichokes close the gap to just six at halftime, 43-37.

The T-Birds then went to work quickly in the second half, out-scoring SCC, 17-3 to start the period, capped by a Pratt three-pointer which made the score 60-40.

Mesa's only bobble in the half came when it went through a 4:41 stretch without scoring as the Chokes narrowed the gap to 65-51. Still up 70-57 with 5:39 to play, MCC reeled off eight unanswered points to grab a 78-57 margin with just 2:14 remaining and coasted home with its seventh straight win over Scottsdale.

Mesa shot a fine 28-52 from the floor, .538, and was 10-22 on three-pointers. It also dominated the boards, 39-29.

The T-Birds had five players in double figures led by Pratt with 18, including hitting 3-4 threes. Khari Holloway (So., Jackson, Miss/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) scored a career-high 17 and Jones added 14 while canning four of ten three-pointers. Mitch Burnett (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Central H.S.) barely missed a double-double with ten points and a game-high nine rebounds and Bingham added ten points and seven boards.

With the win MCC is now 2-1 and 1-1 in ACCAC play. Scottsdale is 4-4 and 1-1.

The T-Birds host Arizona Western Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Theo Heap Gym.
