Mesa Rolls in Season Opener at PC, 44-18

Phoenix, AZ - Quite a way to start the 2018 season for the Mesa Thunderbirds football team as they defeated the Phoenix College Bears, 44-18, Saturday night at Phoenix College.

Leading the way for Mesa was quarterback Thomas MacVittie, who accounted for five of Mesa touchdowns.  Two came on the ground while three came through the air as Mesa's offense scored touchdowns on four of its five possessions in the first half.

MacVittie rushed for the first touchdown on the opening drive then he connected later in the quarter with running back, Terrance Roberts Jr, out of the backfield to help Mesa take a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

After a PC score, the T-Birds rattled off the next to two scoring drives, with MacVittie connecting with Christion Brewington from three yards out then it was MacVittie scampering in from five yards out later in the quarter to extend Mesa's lead to 28-6.

The Mesa defense stepped up right before half as the Bears were threatening to score.  An interception in the endzone by Jaquan Beaver halted any scoring chance and the T-Birds took a 22 point advantage into halftime.

Mesa received the ball in the second half and wasted little time getting in the endzone, as they used five plays in one minute and 29 seconds, topped off with a MacVittie pass to Chris Ryan to make it a 35-6 game.

Aaron Aros would tack on a 36 yard field goal with 8:58 in the third quarter to extend Mesa's lead to 38-6.

Terrance Roberts Jr would finish the Mesa scoring in the fourth quarter with a 13 yard run with 7:58 to play, capping off a solid opening night for the T-Birds.

Mesa moves to 1-0 on the young season and will again be on the road next weekend as they travel to Glendale Community College for a matchup against the Gauchos at 7 pm.
