Football's Derron Brown commits to California

MESA, AZ – Defensive back Derron Brown (Laveen, AZ/Fairfax H.S.) has become the latest in a long list of Mesa players to commit to NCAA FBS schools, saying he will attend California next year.

Brown, a 6-2, 195-pounder, made 48 tackles during the 2014 season for the T-Birds, with 30 of them unassisted. He also had six tackles for loss, three interceptions, three pass-breakups and a forced fumble.

Cal is looking for defensive backs and Brown seems to fit right into its plans. He will also join an old friend, A.J. Greathouse on the Golden Bears. Greathouse went through spring drills with the T-Birds and was offered a scholarship before he ever played a down for MCC.

The list of Mesa players headed to four-year schools after the past season is rapidly growing. Brown is the eighth player to commit so far.

Last year 35 moved on, including 13 to FBS schools. After the 2012 season MCC had 19 move on to four-year programs.
