Rallying in Game 2, #6 Mesa Sweeps Double-Header with Pima, 7-3 (7), 8-5

Mesa, AZ - The #6 Mesa Thunderbirds won two ACCAC DII games Saturday afternoon by sweeping the Pima Aztecs, 7-3 (7), 8-5.

Game 1

It was the Joshua Brown pitching hour in game one as Brown pitched six solid innings for Mesa, allowing four hits and striking out eight while not giving up any runs.  

Offensively, Ben Lewis started the scoring with a two RBI double to right-center field in bottom of the first inning to make a 2-0 game.  Garrett LeBreche and Kelby Richardson would score in the bottom half of the second inning, LeBreche on a wild pitch and Richardson on a sacrifice fly.

Marcus Skundrich would double in Mesa's fifth run in the fifth inning, smacking one over the left fielder's head to score Paul Steffenson from first.  Later in the inning, pinch-runner Jace DeGrange would score on a wild pitch and Riley Peterson would single in Ben Lewis to finish off the scoring for Mesa.

Logan Campbell and Nolan Ruff would finish off the Aztecs in the seventh inning to finalize a game one victory.

Game 2

Mesa held to a 2-0 advantage til the sixth inning when it seemed as though the Aztecs would never get out.  Pima would put a five spot on the board and take a 5-2 advantage.  The T-Birds never said surrender though as Riley Peterson knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the sixth.  In the seventh, it was then Mesa's turn to put a five spot on the board, all starting with an Aztec error at second base with the bases loaded, allowing two runs to score to tie it at five.

Ben Lewis then flexed his muscles and jacked a three-run homer deep over the 375 feet sign in left center field to push Mesa's lead to 8-5.  For Lewis, that's his second homer of the season.

Relievers Richard Walker and Tyler Hilton finished off the Aztecs to take the two game sweep.

Mesa moves to 13-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in ACCAC play.  The T-Birds will be at home tomorrow afternoon with one game against Thompson Rivers University at noon.
