#12 Mesa Takes Down Scottsdale, 14-7: Battle with PC for Top DII Playoff Spot Awaits

Mesa, AZ - The #12 Mesa Thunderbirds kept the Artichokes at bay Wednesday afternoon as they beat their freeway rival, 14-7.

Scottsdale took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning off Mesa starting pitcher, Riley Grivette but the T-Birds answered back in both the bottom of the first and second inning with runs of their own to tie the game at two.

Then Mesa took their first lead of the afternoon in the third when they scored four runs on four hits and a walk.  Hunter Bross lead things off with a single followed by a single by Jared Crockett.  Kody Funderburk then drove both runners home with a double to deep left center field.  Garrett Smith was then able to reach by way of the walk which allowed Marcus Skundrich to double in both runners.

The fighting Artichokes didn't go away into the sunset as they added a four spot in the top half of the next inning, notching the game six.

Another four run inning though by Mesa helped seal the deal.  Bross collected an RBI double while Esteban Martinez and Garrett Smith each had RBI's of their own in the inning.

The T-Birds would tack on a three spot in the eighth inning to help Mesa move to 39-15 on the season, 24-14 in conference play.

Mesa will finish off the regular season with a huge two game series against Phoenix College.  Both teams are neck and neck heading towards the regular season finish line, both battling for the #1 spot in the conference tournament that begins the following week.
