#6 Mesa Wins Season Opener, 13-1 (8)

Mesa, AZ - Gusty winds and chilling temperatures made it feel like baseball was being played at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.  But it was opening day baseball in Mesa between the #6 T-Birds and Benedictine Redhawks JV with the T-Birds winning, 13-1, in eight innings.

Sophomore short-stop Esteban Martinez started the scoring for Mesa when he tripled down the right field line to score Hunter Bross to make it a 1-0 game.

Martinez was then knocked in on a single by catcher Marcus Skundrich to make it 2-0.

In the third inning, Kody Funderburk hit an RBI double to left center field to make the score 3-0.  Later in the inning, pinch runner Jace DeGrange scored on a errant throw from first to home to make a 4-0 game.

In the sixth, Mesa put a seven spot on the board to make it 11-0 and put two more runs on the board in the seventh to make it 13-1.

Mesa begins the season at 1-0.  Mesa and Benedictine JV will back at it again tomorrow for a double-header, first game at noon.
