Carvalho chosen by Royals in Major League Baseball draft

MESA, AZ - Two-time All-American Tyler Carvalho (So., Lancaster, Calif/Paraclete H.S.) has been chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the recent Major League Baseball draft.

Carvalho was taken in the 25th round and will join another former T-Bird in the Royals'  organization. Brian Broderick is playing for Kansas City's AAA affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers. He currently has a 3-2 record and 2.73 ERA. He pitched in 11 games for the major league Washington Nationals in 2011 before being injured.

Carvalho was named a third team NJCAA Division II All-American after posting a 7-2 record along with a 0.90 ERA. He had 64 strikeouts and only seven walks in 60 innings before he was injured in early April and missed the remainder of the season.

In 2014 he was a major factor in the T-Birds' Division II national championship and was chosen as a first team All-American. He pitched the last inning of Mesa's 9-7, 11-inning win over Hinds (Miss.) in the championship game. That season he posted an 11-2 record with a 1.67 ERA.

He has signed with Cal-Bakersfield for next season. The Roadruners won the WAC championship in May, reaching the NCAA regionals. There they lost to UCLA before defeating Mississippi. In an elimination game they again lost to UCLA.
